AXA Insurance - “Women who lead” - Panel Speaker

Women who lead

Karen Emelu recently participated as a speaker at the Women in Leadership event hosted by Black Girls in Tech in partnership with AXA, joining an accomplished group of women leaders committed to advancing equity, innovation, and opportunity across industries.

The event brought together professionals, entrepreneurs, and emerging leaders to explore the evolving nature of leadership and the role of women in shaping the future of business, technology, and society. Drawing on her experience as a business leader, board advisor, and advocate for inclusive innovation, Karen shared insights on the leadership principles that have guided her career and continue to inform her work across the public and private sectors.

During the discussion, Karen challenged conventional notions of leadership, emphasizing that leadership is not defined by position, title, or authority. Instead, she described leadership as the ability to articulate a compelling vision, recognise opportunities where others may see obstacles, and inspire collective action toward meaningful change.

She also spoke about the importance of audacity in leadership. In an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world, Karen encouraged attendees to embrace bold thinking, step beyond their comfort zones, and remain willing to challenge established norms. She highlighted that many of the most transformative leaders are those who are prepared to enter unfamiliar spaces, ask difficult questions, and act decisively even when the outcome is uncertain.

A central theme of Karen's contribution was the responsibility leaders have to develop and empower others. She noted that sustainable leadership is measured not only by individual success, but by the ability to create opportunities, nurture talent, and elevate the next generation of leaders. Building inclusive environments where diverse perspectives can thrive, she argued, is essential for long-term innovation and progress.

The session also explored the growing importance of authentic leadership in a world increasingly shaped by technology and global interconnectedness. Karen shared her perspective on leading with purpose, integrity, and impact, while remaining committed to continuous learning and service.

As a recognised thought leader on leadership, innovation, digital transformation, and the future of work, Karen continues to engage with global audiences on the opportunities and challenges shaping the modern economy. Her participation in the Women in Leadership event reflects her ongoing commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue, mentoring emerging talent, and empowering individuals to lead with confidence and purpose.

Reflecting on the event, Karen expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to such an important conversation and reaffirmed her passion for supporting others in achieving their full potential. She remains committed to using her platform to inspire, empower, and champion the next generation of leaders.
