Africa in the Algorithm: Shaping the Future of AI from an African Perspective

Karen Emelu was honoured to speak at the Africa Together Conference 2026 at the University of Cambridge, contributing to a timely and thought-provoking discussion on the theme, "Africa in the Algorithm."

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, economies, and societies worldwide, the conversation focused on one of the defining questions of our generation: What role will Africa play in shaping the future of AI—and how can the continent move beyond being a consumer of technology to becoming a creator, contributor, and leader in its development?

The discussion explored critical issues including data ownership, digital infrastructure, governance frameworks, representation within AI systems, and the importance of ensuring that emerging technologies reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. As AI increasingly influences global opportunity, economic growth, and decision-making, Africa's participation in designing and governing these systems has never been more important.

Karen joined an esteemed panel of leaders and innovators, including Lolia Etomi and Laurence F., engaging with students, academics, policymakers, and emerging leaders on the opportunities and responsibilities that accompany technological advancement.

Reflecting on the event, Karen emphasised that the future of artificial intelligence must be global, ethical, and inclusive. Meaningful innovation requires diverse perspectives, equitable access, and intentional collaboration across regions and sectors.

The Africa Together Conference provided an important platform for dialogue, highlighting the vital role African voices must play in shaping the technologies that will influence future generations. As conversations around AI continue to evolve, Karen remains committed to advocating for responsible innovation, inclusive leadership, and greater representation in the digital economy.

The future is not simply about adapting to algorithms , it is about helping to define them.
